P&A Template enterprise edition

This document details the differences between the functionality offered by P&A Template standard edition and P&A Template enterprise edition. These differences are:

  • The enterprise edition provides functionality in modules; the standard edition has all the functionality provided by one system.

  • The user interface provided in the enterprise edition has a number of enhanced features.

  • The enterprise edition offers additional flexibility when managing attached documents.

  • The additional option of SMTP mail integration is offered with the enterprise edition.

  • Data filters in the enterprise edition are more powerful and provide the user with greater flexibility.

  • There are two options for letter generation in the enterprise edition. Letters no longer have to be generated with MS Word macros.

  • An all-new screen designer includes a facility to incorporate user information into data screens (letters and reports).

  • Custom features can be added using plug-ins and wizards in the enterprise edition.

  • User account management is based on user profiles in the enterprise edition, simplifying user-account management.

  • The enterprise edition offers full multi-lingual operation.

  • System performance has been further optimised in the enterprise edition.

  • Users can access the enterprise edition from a remote location without using terminal services.

  • The enterprise version can be configured to run multiple Application Servers providing improved resilience and scalability.

  • Compatibility with MS SQL Server 2005.

Modular approach
In the standard edition of P&A Template, the Windows client provides access to all aspects of system functionality (data access, letter and report generation, user account management, screen design, etc.) This version is normally supplied with the Maintenance Management tool to provide users with some basic management of SQL Server when MSDE is employed (MSDE has no Enterprise Manager tool).
The enterprise edition of P&A Template provides users with access to data, reports and letters via the main P&A Template Windows client. As this edition includes significantly more functionality, administrative features are provided via separate modules. These include modules for user/system administration, server management, client management and screen design. In addition, a Maintenance Manager module is also available should users opt to base their system on MSDE. 

User interface
The user interface provided by the Windows client is very similar in design in both editions. This ensures that upgrades from the standard edition to the enterprise edition are seamless and easy to effect. The enterprise edition’s Windows client does however provide a number of additional features.


P&A Template Client – enterprise edition

Some functionality available in the standard edition’s Windows client has been moved to separate modules in the enterprise edition (see above). The management console in the enterprise edition is therefore simpler to use. 

Management Console – enterprise edition

It is possible to run the enterprise edition Windows client in normal or expert mode. The management consol is not visible when normal mode is selected making the user interface simpler and therefore easier to use. When expert mode is selected, the management console is displayed. The management console in the enterprise edition displays report templates, letter templates and filter definitions on three separate lists (in the standard edition these are all in one list).

The search facility in the enterprise edition provides a number of benefits that are not available to users of the standard edition. It is possible to have the search pane permanently open, making it quicker and easier to find records in the database. Note that it is also possible to use the screen without this pane if preferred.
Furthermore, an additional search tool is available that enables users to search for particular record in a main-screen while viewing details in a sub-screen.

Attached documents
Viewing attached documents has been made clearer in the enterprise edition of P&A Template; embedded and linked documents are displayed on separate tabs on the screen. In addition, it is possible in the enterprise edition to edit embedded MS Word documents and the system will save the changes. 
Once embedded, the indexing of keywords (required for the word search feature) can be enabled or disabled for individual documents as required. The enterprise edition also has an enhanced keyword search facility. This facility enables users to search for more than five keywords at one time, and the user can specify that ‘all’ or ‘any’ of the words specified should match.

E-mail integration
The standard edition of P&A Template enables users to send e-mail via a copy of MS Outlook installed on their PC. This feature is also available in the enterprise edition; however, enterprise edition users can choose to send mail via an SMTP mail server (where clients use Lotus Notes or Groupwise for example) as an alternative. 

Filter definition
The criteria that define filters in P&A Template standard edition are based on data from the screen for which the filter is designed. So for example, a list of companies can be filtered based on the company location as detailed in the company screen. In the enterprise version criteria can also be based on data from related screens. A list of companies can therefore be filtered based on the products they have bought, as recorded in a products sub-screen. 

Letter generation
In the standard edition of P&A Template, letter generation is achieved by running MS Word macros on the user’s PC. In the enterprise edition, in addition to this method, letters can also be generated on the server using proprietary letter generation technology. This is not only more efficient (particularly where remote access is required), but also uses a generic rtf file-format (enabling users to view the documents without using MS Word).

Screen design
The screen designer in the enterprise edition of P&A Template offers all of the functionality available in the standard edition, plus a facility to include user drop-down lists in screens. Integrated with the user security, this facility provides a powerful means to control access to information within the database. For example, a user can be associated with a training course or a vacancy, enabling individuals to filter or report on their own courses or vacancies. 

Plug-ins and Wizards
Plug-ins and wizards can provide custom functionality in the enterprise edition of P&A Template. For example, a graphical screen representing course bookings on a calendar could be provided as a plug-in, or a web-publishing wizard provided to enable users to publish vacancy or training course details on their web site. 

User-account management
Having separate modules to manage the administration of the system makes managing user-profile simpler in the enterprise edition of P&A Template. In this edition it is not necessary to grant or deny access to the administrative functionality, as the users will not have these features installed on their computer.

The concept of user profiles has been implemented in the enterprise edition. Any number of profiles can be defined in the system (detailing the report templates, letter templates, screens and data that can be accessed). A user account can be granted access to any number of profiles. Where larger numbers of user accounts are required, creating accounts and updating access rights is simpler and quicker in the enterprise edition.

Fully multi-lingual operation
Where P&A Template standard edition is available in a number of languages, an implementation of this system normally runs in just one language. The enterprise edition of P&A Template offers true multi-lingual operation. Users can access a single system in a variety of languages (currently English, Spanish and Dutch are available).

Enhanced performance and remote access
The speed and performance of the enterprise version of P&A Template is optimised for larger volumes of data and users, and for a higher throughput of database transactions. Remote access to systems based on the standard edition of P&A Template required the use of Terminal Services of Citrix. P&A Template enterprise edition enables native remote access over a wide area network.

Improved resilience and scalability
For business critical applications, it is possible to run multiple copies of the Application Server in the P&A Template enterprise edition. If a network node or one of the application servers suffers a performance-related problem, the system will continue to provide a good level of service to users via other Application Servers. This architecture ensures that the enterprise edition of P&A Template can provide a scalable solution; where more users require access and higher volumes of data need to be managed, additional Application Servers can be commissioned.
